Dear lizvlx:
Thank you so much for your quick reply! You have been a great help.
However, I beg to differ with you on the age question. First,
statistically the "type" of person that is participating in this is
VERY important. Second, you DO in fact ask for age. I saw it where
people sign up to "request donations". You don't keep this on record?
Thank you again!
Kiley

  dear kiley,

  thanks for the email.

  and, here is a madam...

nice to see that some people in political
and system theory are thinking about what
  we are doing.

we are not asking for age, as in the
voting process age is such an important
factor. this is why we want to ignore
  this factor.

and then, most people are not honest concerning
their age anyway, so we thought, better forget
  about it at all.

abd it would be great to receive a copy of your
  paper, yo!

Dear Lizvlx,

Don't get me wrong, my cynicism doesn't apply to trust in general,
but to trust in the context of a business transaction. To pay for a
service, when delivery can't be verified seems fiscally unsound.
Capitalism is not based on trust, but on mutually verifiable benefit.

On the other hand, humans don't operate on logic alone, so the
vote-selling industry might thrive anyway. But I hope not, since
this perverts democracy by exploiting the short-sightedness of voters
to the benefit of the wealthy (let's all just sell our votes to Bill
Gates and let him run the country). Note that I (as a Libertarian)
am not against vote sellers' desire for money, nor do I think that
vote-selling should be illegal. But I am disturbed by the
development of yet another technology that translates the ignorance
of the masses into yet more concentrated power for the wealthy elite.
This scenario sounds like a morally bankrupt and dangerous one for
any country.

Regards,
Leo

Dear Sirs,
I am sure with all of the recent legal attention, you are being
inundated with questions and requests. I must say I am fascinated by
your endeavor. In fact, so much so, I am incorporating your site in
my thesis on the modern political campaign process. I have already
received offers to publish the draft of my paper in a couple popular
political magazines here in the US. I am revising my paper to
incorporate [V]ote-auction.com and the legal issues you are facing.
One very important piece of information is missing in your User
Statistics page: What is the age variation on your registered voters?
You show gender, occupation, education, race, etc. but not age. Any
reason why? Could you please share that information with me for the
sake of my paper? It is very important. I would, of course, be
happy to send you a copy of the paper before publication, if you
would like.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Kiley Sullivan

First off, I think your site/idea are great. I was
just talking about the Presidential Election last
night, and how it is funny that the President is
actually elected by only a fraction of the people who
actually live in the US. It was then that I thought
about the idea that the government should pay people
to Vote.. I mean, if people could make $100 for thier
vote, we might actually get an election turn out that
is worth it.

As for all these people who have "ethical" issues with
it.. they need to get thier heads out of thier a$$es
and wake up. Why is it wrong for the American People
to take money for votes, when our elected officials do
it ALL the time.. hell, if they didn't, we wouldn't
have so many lobbiest (and don't even get me started
on Unions).

I guess the reason the big wigs would have such a
problem with it is either a> Its not thier pockets
that are getting the money. or b> It could actually
change how politics works (who knows, maybe a 3rd
party could actually win -- and looking at my two
choices for this upcoming election I think it wouldn't
be hard to find someone better than "Tweetle Dee &
Tweetle Dumb" <Gore & Bush>.

Don't let the legal system stomp on you just because
you are some multimillion dollar company. (which if
you were I'm sure you could make a few donations to
Senators and this whole thing could go away)

Anyone who says it is the American People who decide
the elections is smoking something (even if they are
not inhaling).. The cold, simple truth is that MONEY
makes the US go around.. and it is just plain
insultive when people say that it isn't and that
paying people for thier votes would have "moral
issues".

Anywho, I'm done ranting.. Best of Luck..

William Gilbert II

Your website is not as clear as it should be on exactly how it is one
gets paid for their vote, or how exactly that vote is "delivered" to
those who want.

Please explain clearly.

Thanks for replying. But your answer really surprised me.

Payment based on trust? How naive! I get to have my cake and eat it too.

And a "moral" person who sells his vote to the highest bidder -- what a laugh!

Dear Sir:

Capitalism is argueably the world's most effective tool to providing a better
life for many people. It rallies people to do more for themselves, and as a
result for each other, than any other politico-economic system in history.
Capitalism has given you the opportunity to create your own vote "brokering"
business. In your web site you have highlighted some very interesting (and
rare) cases of influence peddling in the American voting arena. I think you
will find that the vast majority of people (and especially Amercans) find it
distasteful. You have made the wild assumption that the American vote is for
sale based upon your weak analysis of four insignificant events in American
history. From your in-depth analysis your able deduce that the American vote is
for sale.

There are many ways of making money over the internet...and as I am a web
developer by profession I know this to be true. Surley you can think of a more
positive and produtive way of making your fortune. As it stands, you business
venture defines you as negative and pessemistic . Best of luck.

Paul Kitko

P.S. You can take your website, roll it up real tight and CRAM IT!

Not long ago, I sent this same question to your information
email address, and have not received an answer.

I am interested in making a contribution to influence votes
in favor of a candidate whose campaign I manage, but we are
concerned that there is no way we can be guaranteed that
our contributions will have any effect whatsoever. Frankly,
I don't believe that you can enforce, legally or practically,
any commitment on whom a voter casts his/her vote for. Nor

What's to stop the same bunch that took your registration down last
time from doing the same with vote-auction.com? Remember that the
city of Chicago has from your viewpoint, essentially unlimited legal
resources and is likely to get cooperation from US authorities.

While it's possible that they might attempt to block access to a
foriegn domain, I don't even think the US government would be willing
to try something with a 100% guarantee of massive trouble.

Read this:

This is actually kind of cool.

I live in a swing state and I'd love to trade my vote with someone in a
non-swing state to vote for an independent. You think you could
facilitate this?

my name is dale lezon. i'm a reporter with the houston chronicle
newspaper in houston, texas. i'd like to talk with you about the web
site. specifically, i'd like to find out how many, if any, people in
houston and/or texas have auctioned their votes or how many people in
houston and/or texas have contacted the site. with texas governor Bush
running, the site is of speical interest to texans.
here are a few questions. if you would answer them, i'd appreciate it.

have any votes been auctioned? is the site a satire on the u.s.
political system?

is it a money-making project? where did the idea for the site originate?

does the site contain all the u.s. federal, state and local elections?

does it contain elections from other countires?

The judge ordered the website shut down; is that why i can't scoll down
to auction offerings?

who owns the site?

if you could answer these questions and contact me i would appreciate
it. you can e-mail or call me at 1-713-220-7523. thank you, dale.

EAR PLUGS
After doing party preparatory work all day Saturday, the Degenerate Press
staff met a mess o' degenerates at your editor's favorite Mexican food
restaurant, El Potro, for cheap margaritas and piles of food.
Coincidentally, a couple of The Ditchdiggers were there (thanks again for
the shot, guys!) and mentioned their work on an upcoming album.
Afterward some of us hit the Star Bar. We arrived at 10 and the joint was
empty, so we hung out on the patio for more drinks. Eventually we slunk
upstairs to catch White Lights. It's a strange, postmodern mix of 50's
rockabilly/twang and eerie lounge music, including a violin and xylophone
accompanying the usual big guitar sounds and minimalist percussion. It's
tough to describe but if you're in the mood for something odd and different
check 'em out.
Sunday the preparations continued with more decor arrangements and record
sorting and such. We've mailed invites to just about everyone who asked for
one so if you don't get yours by Monday yell, or check out the on-line
version. They're not as nice as the print version, but they're passable:
http://www.degeneratepress.com/invite/halloween_invite.jpg
http://www.degeneratepress.com/invite/halloween_map.gif
By the way, I've gotten several degenerates requesting the traditional
Degenerate Press New Year's Bash. I'll do some informal polling at the
Halloween party and see if I think we can pull it off but it's looking like
"If you build it, they will come." You might want to start looking into
airfare, explosives, the usual. You've been warned.

BLASPHEMY
According to the Ralph Nader web site, " Ralph Nader was denied entry
Tuesday night to the campus of Washington
University by the Commission on Presidential Debates, despite the fact
that he had a valid pass and was scheduled to be interviewed by WUTV, the
campus television station. This marks the second time in two weeks that the
CPD, in association with local law enforcement, has unlawfully denied Nader
access to a university campus hosting a presidential debate."
http://votenader.org/press/0001018singledout.html
I've had several degenerates say they'd registered to vote this election
just so they could vote Nader. I'd like to that those, and anyone else that
won't vote Bush or Gore!

SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER
We caught the neighbor's mover on fire cutting the grass, but it's done.
We got the invites on-line too:
http://www.degeneratepress.com/invite/halloween_invite.jpg
http://www.degeneratepress.com/invite/halloween_map.gif
They're not as nice as the print version, but they'll do.
We hit every thrift store in town for the soundtrack.
We've been assembling the furnishings and decor for decades. October 28,
Saturday, it all pays off - degenerate SW's 30th birthday party, the
Degenerate Press editor's 33rd birthday party, and the DP Housewarming and
Halloween party all in one night, all in one place - Degenerate Press' HQ.
It's a costume event with a 70's theme (SW was born in 1970) so either dust
off the bell-bottoms and leisure suits, or figure out some clever 70's
reference on your own. Door prizes for best costumes!
Assuming the weather outside isn't frightful, we're gonna kick things off
around 4 in the afternoon for the outdoor grill and frisbee fetishists out
there, and for those who have kids/dogs they can't leave at home even for a
couple hours.
As the daylight degenerates, so will we - we'll kick out the kids and kick
out the jams (there was more to the 70's than disco!), suck down some
beverages (various, but if you're a beer/wine/liquor snob you might want to
bring your own), and surprise you with other eclectic entertainment.
Contact us with your postal address for an invite!

Quarter with your favorite sci-fi/b-movie/cam-girl celeb. Check out

"It seems like the perfect place to greet the coming Armageddon. (God,
unlike small minded mortals, knows that the end of the millennium occurs at
the end of this year). Actually, you'd think that the return would be
2,000 years after Jesus' DEATH rather than his birth. Actually, the only
reason to expect Armageddon, is the fact that the Degenerates are having a
party. See ya there." degenerate JH
"The most irresponsible fun I've had since... ever." degenerate BC

you people need to look at your website on smaller resolutions. My god,
learn how to design a website. I'm on my laptop and cant' even scroll dow or
to the right. Nice, scrolling options you didn't allow. YOU HAVE TO DESIGN
FOR SMALL RESOLUTIONS AND YOU SHOULDN'T BE USING FRAMES. I just saw your
main man on cnn's talkback live. what a joke. they are all laughing at
this guy.

Hi.

I have another question. The numbers on the site are fabricated; you have
mentioned that.

Here is a concern. The people who registered may face harassment from
government officials, even though they never intended to buy or sell votes.
In an earlier e-mail, you stated that you had collected information solely
for demographic purposes. However, there is now the issue that Chicago and
Illinois and USA officials may attempt to prosecute people. How is their
privacy guaranteed?

Here's more news about what is happening here:

Thanks,

Steve Imparl

Hello,

I asked a question by email several weeks ago and recieved no reply.
My question again: How does vote-aution.com ensure that a purchased
vote will be cast for the candidate that the buyer wishes?

I don't understand what would prevent me from selling a vote then
voting as I please anyway. Is come kind of absentee-voting system
employed? The viability of the vote-selling "industry" would seem to
hinge on this issue.

Thanks,
Leo Cabana

Noticed that you got shut down. I'm not sure how serious you were, but
you definitely got some attention. And personally I think that the
actions of the officials of Cook County, IL against you were unwarranted.

While I think you have a valid point in regards to how political
campaigns have essentially become business endeavors, I would never, ever
"sell" my vote. The moral and ethical questions aside, it does not,
based upon my experience, make economic sense. I have worked for
Mayoral, Congressional, Senatorial, and even Presidential campaigns, and
they are notoriously bad employers. At least when it comes to the bottom
line. I rarely got paid on time. And frequently, when I got a check, I
was encouraged not to deposit it "until further notice." Too many
campaigns are fueled by credit, and too many leave their bills unpaid for
years after the campaign is over.

Given my experience, if I sold my vote, I know that I would quite
possibly have to wait a good 2 years before I received payment. No
thanks.

All the same, kudos to you! You have, in a very creative way, created a
forum for what can possibly be a very constructive dialogue regarding our
political system.

Hope you get back on-line soon,
Tom Fogarty

  PR MAILING FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

  --------------------------------------------------------

[V]ote-auction announces END-RESULTS of GRAND AUCTION

  --------------------------------------------------------

  Vienna/Berlin, November 7th, 2000, 5am CET

Below is the latest press release by [V]ote-auction:

  http://62.116.31.68
  http://www.voteauction.de / realname: voteauction
  [formerly Vote-auction.com and Voteauction.com].

You can also find this press release at
  http://62.116.31.68/pr.htm

For any further information feel free to contact
pr@[62.116.31.68] or in urgent cases call our
  ubermorgen.com hotlines:

  berlin +49-175-2066954
  vienna +43 676 9300061

  -------------------------------------------------------
It's different because it's fundamentally different:

  [V]ote-auction http://62.116.31.68
  -------------------------------------------------------

  [V] Intro

[V]ote-auction, the election industry leader, is proud to
annnounce the end-results of the grand - or, perhaps more
  accurately, notorious - [V]ote-auction GAME.

Many participants acted as if they had actually considered it a
real business; in fact, it was indeed a real-life game for voters
who finally had found a way to think about what their vote is
worth on the free market; and to themselves.

For us, the operators, it turned out to be less of a action-
service and more of a legal rollercoaster.

[V] Game? Street Theatre? Comic? Business?

Lots has been said about how to distinguish between a real business
and a cartoon in a sunday newspaper:
  http://www.cnn.com/video/burden/2000/10/24/show.rm80.ram

Most of these nice sayings are true for the offline world - but on
  the net, things are different.

Whether or not one likes it, the net is NOT a commercial playground
a priori. It is an open space for ANY communication needs between
any people. If you think it is hard to know for sure if our site
was a game or a business, well, then that's a good lesson you have
learned. Try any web-site and try to check out if they are for "real",
  here a small test-environment:

  http://yesrudy.com
  http://gatt.org
  http://rtmark.com/gwbush/
  http://www.fpo.at
  http://www.microsoft.com

There is no last page with cartoons on the net. That is why
it is called an interlinked system and not a book.

You'd better learn the differenciate now! If not, you might
fall for a real prank one day!

  [V] Who is suing whom?

  legal platform coming soon: http://www.ipnic.org
< the nic is the content is the user is the net >

Here an excerpt of the current situation:

. Massachussetts is suing vote-auction and our providers
    reason: "selling votes"
    status: injunction order

. Missouri is suing vote-auction and our providers
    reason: "false promises to consumers"
    status: injunction order

. Chicago Board of Elections is suing vote-auction and our providers
reason: "selling and buying of votes"
    status: injunction order

. Various "investigations" by Attorney Generals
    reason: diverse
    status: unknown

. [V]ote-auction is suing CORE in switzerland
reason: breach of contract, damages, denial of service
    status: preparation

It seems that we are witnessing the birth of a new sub-genre
of action-art: DIGITAL LEGAL ART. appearantly it is even not so
much the end-user in front of the terminal to whom we appeal
most, but the people in U.S. legal offices... very sexy!

Nevertheless, we are sure that the cases will be dropped, as
it will be obvious, even to the legal folk, that there are
people out there buying and selling votes - but that it is
not us. We just gave you the showcase. The real dealers do
their businesses quite openly in Washington. Vive la difference!

  [V] Campaigning for our rights

We would like to thank our partners for giving us the support
we need and enjoy. To those who despise us: Thank you also!

We regard negative and positive feedback alike as active
support and intelligent modes of communication.

To those who think that we have now given up: Come on! We
have all had our fun. Now, let's face reality. The net is,
at the time, NOT a free place. It is directly and indirectly
controlled by U.S. courts of all names. The root zone is
basically owned by the U.S. Ministry of Commerce [well, then
maybe the Chicago Board of Elections should have sued the
  Ministry of Commerce].

If they decide to halt the internet tomorrow, then it is Nike
time - they just do it! Cynical? No. Realistic. Or should ICANN
bring Capitalism and DemoCRAZY closer together? Or maybe even
  CORE?

So... if you dont get help from us, please get help somewhere!

[V] What is new on the Site

We have opened our site and data to the public, so everyone
can see for him or herself what is happening. Feel free to
access the user database - and do not be surprised to find
no personal data. Asking for data at the frontdesk does not
necessarily imply storing it in the backoffice...

What you can find is the socio-demographics of everybody
who dared to play [V]ote-auction. If you ask yourself if the
numbers are real - that is an intelligent question - but has
never been answered on the net. Neither can we answer it.

You will have to be quick to access the site - we will put
it into real legal context by November 8th.

When the game is over, the players have to go home!
